Intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe, the day was started by World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1987. One of the major aims of World No Tobacco Day is to draw public attention to negative health effects of tobacco consumption. Tobacco consumption causes around 7 million deaths each year worldwide. This includes around 600,000 deaths resulting from non-smokers being exposed to second-hand or passive smoke.
