100th and final slot of 'Smart City' goes to the Scotland of the East, Shillong
Shillong selected to become the 100th smart city of India
The Housing and Urban Affairs ministry said on June 20 that the 100thcity to receive funding under the Centre's flagship Smart Cities Mission has been decided after evaluating the proposal submitted by the Scotland of the East, Shillong.
This was the final empty slot of the mission, that is given for the Meghalaya capital.
As PTI reports, an official release said:
Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition and with today's announcement, selection of 100 cities has been completed under the Smart Cities Mission
How the final slot for Shillong came along
The ministry had, till now, kept the final, i.e., the 100th slot for the Smart Cities Mission on hold for the Meghalaya capital.
Often known as Scotland of the East, the potential smart city was selected for inclusion in the scheme, but couldn't submit its proposal on time due to state elections on February 27.
According to the ministry's release, with the selection of Shillong, the total proposed investment in the finally selected 100 cities under the Smart Cities Mission would be Rs 2,05,018 crore.
Smart Cities Mission
The 100 Smart Cities Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015.
In January 2016, 20 cities were announced under the mission, followed by 13 cities in May 2016, 27 in September 2016 and 30 cities in June 2017.
The final entries were the nine cities in January this year.
Government's role towards a smart city
- Under the Smart Cities scheme, each city will get Rs 500 crore from the Centre for implementing various projects
- An equal amount, on matching basis, will have to be contributed by the state or urban local governing bodies
A city's role towards becoming smart
Under the mission, the selected cities would have to take up various projects such as:
- 'smart' roads
- rejuvenation of water bodies
- building cycle tracks, walking paths, smart classrooms, skill development centres
- upgradation of health facilities
- pan-city projects like integrated command control centre

- Smart Cities will utilise analytics to give efficient solutions which would result in energy saving cost up to 30 per cent
- This will build sustainable and liveable cities
Rakesh Kaul, Partner, Government and Public Sector, PwC India, said, "This program, when synergized with other key programs like Make in India, Skill India and Digital India, will provide a unique platform for Young India to achieve rapid, equitable and sustainable growth. The move to focus on encouraging innovation in urban design through a "City Challenge" is a smart way to begin the Smart City Journey."
